Travel Health Insurance: Global Protection for Expats
Living in Germany often means traveling frequently—whether for business, visiting family back home, or exploring Europe. But did you know that your German health insurance (especially public) often provides limited or no coverage outside the EU? Travel Health Insurance is the most affordable way to ensure you're protected against massive medical bills worldwide.
The Story of Maria: A Quick Trip and a Huge Bill
Maria, an expat from Spain living in Rheine, went on a dream holiday to the USA. She thought her German public health insurance (GKV) would cover her. While hiking, she had a minor accident that required a hospital visit and a few stitches.
Back in Germany, she was shocked: the US hospital bill was over $4,000. Her public insurance only reimbursed a tiny fraction—the amount the treatment would have cost in Germany. Maria had to pay the remaining $3,500 out of her own pocket.
"I didn't realize how small the cost of a travel policy was compared to the risk," Maria says. For less than €15 a year, she could have had 100% coverage and a stress-free recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Doesn't my EHIC (Public Insurance Card) cover me abroad?
Only within the EU and only for standard public treatments. It does not cover private clinics, and critically, it NEVER covers emergency medical repatriation back to Germany, which can cost tens of thousands of euros.
Is there a limit on how many trips I can take?
No, an annual policy covers an unlimited number of trips throughout the year, as long as each individual trip does not exceed the maximum duration (usually 56 days).
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Generally, only acute and unpredictable illnesses or accidents that happen during the trip are covered. If you travel specifically for treatment or have a planned surgery, it will not be covered.
What happens if I need to be flown back to Germany?
If it is 'medically reasonable' or 'medically necessary', the insurance organizes and pays for the entire transport (e.g., via air ambulance) back to a German hospital.
Does it cover my family too?
You can choose between an individual policy or a family policy. A family policy usually covers your spouse/partner and all dependent children in one affordable package.
How do I get my money back after a doctor visit?
For small costs, you usually pay upfront and submit the invoices via an app. For hospital stays, you (or the hospital) call the 24/7 hotline on your insurance card, and they will provide a direct guarantee of payment.
